Driving in Friant

My best friend and I were driving up to Bass Lake on Saturday and we learned an important driving tip. Now I preface this by saying that we may be the last ones to learn this. But don't drive up to Friant on a Saturday morning if you can avoid it. You really get slowed down by the scads of bicyclers on the road. We got onto Friant road at Willow and took it all the way up and we should have just started on 41.

FYI Goes Solar

So some of you may have heard that Fresno Yosemite International has had a major solar panel instillation. I am intrigued about how all the financing broke down. Triplepundit had some interesting info on the set up:

World Water & Solar Technologies designed and lead managed the solar PV project, the core of which is a 2-megawatt, 9.5-acre ground mounted solar system, about the size of seven football fields. Sharp Solar supplied the solar panels for the project. Xantrex Technology supplied the inverters.

FYI expects to save about $13 million over the solar system’s 20-year expected life. The Power Purchase Agreement allowed the airport to install the system without incurring any capital expense. PG&E, administrator of the California Public Utility Commission incentive scheme, will also supervise the net-metering link with the power grid.

So if they didn't incur any capitol expense was it free? Did they pay labor? Is this viewed as an advertising ploy? I guess I am just suspicious.

Could Fresno Really Get a Nuclear Power Plant?

It looks like there is finally a possibility of solving the water district's problems and getting cheap nuclear power all at once. All it takes is Fresno Nuclear Energy Group buys half of the idle land of the Westlands Water District and build a nuclear plant. Then they can desalinate the waste water of the area therefore solving the water problem. The cheap power would of course solve mine and everyone else's energy and money problem.

The Fresno Nuclear Group has even found a French company to take the spent fuel.

The real question is will this ever happen?

You Go Girl!

Props to Nicole Parra for standing up to her party to the point they kicked her out of her office!

Parra has said she won't vote for a budget until lawmakers also reach a deal to put a water bond on the November ballot that could include money for dams. On Sunday, she was the only Democrat who abstained on the state budget vote, which failed on party lines.

Many good things can and have come out of this. First, she made the Democrats mad and as we all know, that can be a very good thing. Second, she has played a key roll in exploiting a very true fact about the Democratic party. It is party before constituents. Yet another thing is that is shows them as the spoiled brats they are. Did they stomp their feet at the time they ordered the move;)?

Habitat Homes with Universal Design

I saw a blog post over at the Fresno News Blog that the new Habitat for Humanity homes are being done with universal design. This is going to increase the housing payment by $17 a month. The question is...Is it worth it? This is going to surprise people but I think it is. These kind of adjustments are very hard and very expensive to do to a house when or if a need arises. Since these houses are being done for the low income, they might not be able to ever make these changes if they are needed. I congratulate Habitat for a great call!
