Wordless Wednesday: Old Buildings

This is a picture I took awhile ago on the Fulton Mall. I love the beauty of the old buildings and it grieves me that so many people in Fresno have never seen them. I know that this is a problem in many cities and in their downtown areas. I would love for there to be a walking tour downtown that talks about the history of these buildings!

Fulton Farmers Market

The kids and I went to the Famers Market on downtown today and it was great! They had awesome prices that were way better than any of the other Famers Markets that I have gone to. There was even parking in the same lot at the market! The Market was on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 7am-2pm. It is at 1612 Fulton St and you can call 227-8026.

Go check it out!

Christmas Tree Lane

Anyone who has been in Fresno very long knows that Christmas Tree Lane is a local mainstay with beautiful homes decorated very elaborately for Christmas. One of my own memories of Christmas Tree Lane was caroling with my 3rd grade Brownie Troop in a little shelter/box that was set up.

Christmas Tree Lane is actually Van Ness from Shields to Shaw avenue (car traffic travels north). This year it runs from December 2, 2008-December 28, 2008. The walk dates this year are Tuesday December 2nd and Wednesday December 10th.

We at the NerdFamily prefer doing the walking nights where we park at Fig Garden. You can then take a bus (with a small fee) that will drop you off at the Shields end and you walk back to your car. But if you are driving, please consider your route carefully. If you need to flip a u-turn you might be waiting a while.

If you need more information you can go to the Fig Garden site on Christmas Tree Lane. The history is really interesting.

A Way to Beat the Summer Blahs

So Works for Me Wednesday is dealing with summer boredom. Well, my favorite blah buster in Fresno is the Zoo memberships. To go to the Chaffee Zoo on time would break down like this: $7 an adult and $3.50 per kid 2 and up. So for the Nerd Family that would total $24.50. A Family Pass is only $50. You can take 2 adults (one of who's name must be on the pass) and up to 4 kids. So not only do we pay for it in about 2 visits but when NerdDad isn't with us I can take a friend and one of her kids. Having little kids it is also a deal because you don't have to worry about getting you entry fee's worth. If the kids are tired you can feel free to leave and check it our next time. This is just about the best deal in the valley. The pass is also good on a variety of zoos outside of our area and discounts in even more (free San Jose and a 50% discount at San Francisco's Aquarium). So while you are traveling look out for an extra deal!

For those outside of Fresno, almost all zoos have deals like this as do many other attractions. So if you find a place your kids like to visit ask!

New Tower Ice Cream Shop

So there is going to be a new ice cream shop in the Tower, Scoops, that is scheduled to open in June! But wait it gets better, they will be serving ice cream from the famed Superior Dairy in Hanford. That ice cream is so good (from what I vaguely remember as a kid) I can't wait!

Best Hot Dogs in Fresno

Fresno Famous is looking for the best hot dogs in Fresno. I have to say that I haven't tried many local places but I love Costco. What do you all think?

CSUF's Farm Market

Now that we are fully launching into summer and construction is done on Chestnut and Barstow, it is a great time to go to Fresno State's Farm Market.

Now I have been in love with the Farm Store since I was a Brownie in 3rd grade and got to take a tour and try their ice cream. I love their produce and usually their prices. But since I had kids and everything was under construction I haven't really ventured out there because parking was horrible. Now they have expanded the parking lot and you can actually drive out there.

But it gets better! Tuesdays they have free ice cream tasting from 9am -6pm! May is sherbet month. Then on Thursdays and Fridays from 4-6pm they have a wine tasting that is only $5 and you get a glass!

So everyone go check it out and let me know what you all think.

Hours:
M-F 8am-7pm
Sat 9am-6pm
Sun 11am-5pm

Possible Local Treasure

Thanks to a find today, I have discovered a possible local treasure. Boba Cabana is a local coffee house across the street from Fresno State's stadium on Barstow. They have free WiFi available, so right there that is a great asset. They also will give you a free drink on your birthday if you just show them you birthday on your ID. Now, I haven't tried them yet so for all I know it may stink but I think it is worth checking out! I will report back when I have more info.

Local Treasure: Strawberry Fields Forever

There is a great list of the local Strawberry Stands over at Fresno County Fruit Trail. It also has a list of Farm Stores.
